Genetic Testing

Our new state-of-the-art women’s health center now offers every patient the latest approach of risk-stratified screening to ensure that women with increased risk of breast cancer receive the diagnostic testing that is best for them. 

Step by step here’s what a patient can expect at their annual mammography appointment:

• Risk-assessment survey
  Every patient is given a short survey with questions that evaluate your personal risk, including genetic history. 

• Personal-risk score
  While you are having your mammogram, we assess your personal risk for breast cancer using software that calculates your lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.

• Genetic counseling
  Based on the score, if a patient is at higher risk for developing breast cancer, they will first meeting with a genetic counselor. The genetic counselor will carefully review your score and discuss next steps. 

• Testing is quick and easy
  Our provider will collect a saliva sample onsite using a special kit. The kit is then shipped to a lab for analysis and the results are delivered to our care team in approximately two weeks.

• Results and care guidelines
  Your mammography results, Terer-Cusik score and genetic testing results are all delivered to the primary care physician by fax, and, in most cases, through their electronic medical record system. We’ll work with your provider to make recommendations for your care path and if any additional diagnostic procedures, such as biopsy or MRI scan, are needed.

As one of few providers in the region offering this advanced technology, we’re committed to improving access to advanced care, locally. How are results delivered? All screening and test results are delivered to both the patient and their referring physician. 

For our patients, results are delivered through MyChart as well as through the mail. They may also receive a call from Dr. Gopal if there is any findings on their mammogram or if there is an indication that they are at high-risk for breast cancer. 

For the referring physician, results are delivered through fax and through Epic (if applicable).
