Problems That Hysterectomy Can Treat
Among the conditions where hysterectomy is used are endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic relaxation and cancer.
Problems with any of the reproductive organs can disrupt your menstrual cycle or cause symptoms. They may also threaten your health. Some of the most common problems that are treated with a hysterectomy are shown below. A hysterectomy may also be done for other reasons:
Fibroids
Endometriosis
Cancer of the uterus, cervix, endometrium, or ovaries
Adenomyosis
Cervical dysplasia
Pelvic organ prolapse
Abnormal uterine bleeding
Chronic pelvic pain
Planning your treatment
After going over the results of your exam and any tests, you and your healthcare provider will make a treatment plan. Options may include hysterectomy by itself or with other treatments. As you create the plan, your healthcare provider may discuss the following questions with you:
How bad is your problem?
Are there any other options to treat your problem?
Do you want to have children?
Should your tubes or ovaries also be removed?
Should the hysterectomy be done abdominally, laparoscopically, or vaginally?
