Quality, Safe Patient Care
The clinical care services and academic programs of UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Chan Medical School help people across the Central New England region lead healthier lives. The physicians and other health care professionals who treat patients at UMass Memorial also conduct research and teach future physicians at the Medical School – some 600 residents and fellows in 53 accredited programs from anesthesiology to vascular surgery. They are blazing a path toward more effective and efficient health care, with a compassionate touch. For example, the UMass Memorial Cancer, Diabetes, Heart and Vascular, and Musculoskeletal Centers of Excellence deliver seamless programs of quality, safe, patient-focused care across the health care system. In 2010, UMass Chan Medical School was awarded a prestigious Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health to create an academic home for clinical and translational science (bench to bedside) across all five UMass campuses and in partnership with UMass Memorial. The UMass Center for Clinical and Translational Science places UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial among an elite consortium of 60 nationally prominent academic medical centers working to speed transfer of laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients, to engage communities in clinical research, and to train a new generation of researchers.
UMass Chan Medical School is one of the fastest-growing research institutions in the United States. Federal and private research grants and contracts at the Medical School rose from about $2 million in 1977 to more than $240 million in FY 2013.

The Medical School’s community programs in education and health harness the skills and expertise of the institution to address pressing local needs, such as yearly free flu vaccination clinics for elderly and other vulnerable populations.
