Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines use a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to create images. With MRI images, physicians can rule out problems, identify areas for treatment and track progress with greater speed and accuracy than ever before. An MRI scan does not involve surgery, radiation, hospitalization or side effects.
Marlborough Hospital MRI systems provide images with outstanding clarity, giving you the comfort of knowing that you will get accurate, timely results of your test.
Preparing for Your MRI
Your doctor will provide you with instructions specific to your MRI exam, such as whether or not you may eat beforehand.
Please be aware that MRI technology is sensitive to metal. You will be asked to remove any metal from your person before the test, including jewelry, clips and pins.
If you become very nervous in confined spaces, you may receive a sedative during your test. In this case, you may need to make arrangements for someone to drive you home after the test.
What to Expect during an MRI at Marlborough Hospital
- The procedure takes about 45 to 90 minutes to complete.
- The exam may require intravenous (IV) injection of a contrast dye.
- You will be asked to lie as still as possible on a cushioned table during the scan.
- You will be in visual and audio contact with the technologist during the entire scan.
