WORCESTER, Mass. - Sen. Ed Markey made a stop on the campus of UMass Chan Medical School Tuesday morning, where he toured the recently opened Veterans Administration Building.
The 48,000 square foot community-based outpatient clinic is equipped to serve more than 16,000 enrolled veterans in Worcester County.
UMass Memorial Medical Center president Michael Gustafson said the hospital has about 800 beds and 500 of them are for adult med-surge patients. These additional 91 beds are about a 19% increase.
"91 beds are desperately needed," Gustafson said. "We have many days that we are starting days with patients waiting in our emergency departments waiting for beds. So this will provide a great relief and also the ability for us to get more patients transferred in to the medical center from outlying hospitals."
Although the study showed that the biggest growth was in community oncology practices, Jeff Gordon, M.D., has seen large hospital systems move in this direction. Gordon, medical director of hematology-oncology at UMass Memorial Health-Harrington in Southbridge, Massachusetts, notes that major hospital systems already have built-in pharmacies for dispensing medications, making it easier to offer specialty oral oncology treatments.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus causes a cold in adults, but can cause a deep lung infection in younger children. The younger a patient is, the worse the virus can be. It's the leading cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children younger than 1.

Worcester firefighter Ryan Kelley had a scab on his temple for two years that never really healed.
He hadn’t done anything about it, when his whole truck decided to attend a free cancer screening held by DetecTogether and UMass Memorial Health at Polar Park last year.
When doctors from UMass saw the scab, they told Kelley it looked like basal cell skin cancer. He worked with them to schedule a biopsy for the next morning.
