Worcester schools expand COVID-19 testing as positive cases rise higher than expected

WORCESTER, Mass. - Just three weeks into the school year, Worcester Public Schools reports 97 positive COVID-19 cases in students and 49 in staff since the first day of school. 

"We didn't expect this," said Rob Pezzella, safety director of Worcester Public Schools.

Breakthrough COVID hospitalizations in Massachusetts remain below 30% of total as state reports 1,726 new infections

Massachusetts reported 1,726 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday as well as 18 new deaths.

The daily report of new infections remains elevated, but Friday’s new case total was a decline from the 2,096 new cases reported on Thursday.

UMass Memorial, Medical School remember opioid overdose victims with 2,100 purple flags

WORCESTER, Mass. - Governor Charlie Baker issued a proclamation declaring August 31 Overdose Awareness Day in Massachusetts.

More than 2,100 purple flags are outside of UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Medical School. Each flag represents a person who died from an opioid overdose in the state in 2020.

Dr. Robert Finberg, who helped lead COVID vaccine research at UMass Medical School in Worcester, dies unexpectedly

Dr. Robert Finberg, known as one of the nation’s foremost virologists and who played a vital role in researching the COVID vaccine in Worcester, died unexpectedly on Monday, UMass Medical School announced.

Finberg, a professor and chair emeritus of the department of medicine, was 71.
