UMass Memorial Health Named to Becker's List of Great Cancer Programs

Each year, Becker's Hospital Review celebrates hospitals and health systems that achieve excellence in oncology. The honor reflects the organizations' success in advancing cancer care through innovative clinical trials and research. We are pleased to share that the 2024 Becker's list, released Tuesday, November 12, includes UMass Memorial Health.

Becker's described our Cancer Center as "a leading cancer treatment facility serving Central Massachusetts and beyond." It noted that the center is "recognized for its nationally accredited breast cancer program and its expertise in pancreatic and lung cancer treatment." The entry also highlighted the center's collaboration with the Medical School on "pioneering clinical trials and innovative therapies."

Hematology/Oncology Interim Chief David Cachia, MD, said earning a spot on the Becker's list was truly a team effort. He praised the hard work of our caregivers across all levels — from support staff, nurses and nurse practitioners to hematology/oncology faculty and senior leadership — for making it possible.

"Oncology is a rapidly changing field that requires institutions to quickly adopt the latest treatments and therapeutic modalities while offering patients the latest options in cutting-edge scientific research," he added. "This recognition puts our hematology/oncology program among the top programs in the country that are leading the way in the battle against various types of cancers."

Dr. Cachia also called out the Cancer Center's special role in the Central Massachusetts community. "Most people would prefer to receive their cancer care closer to their home and loved ones," he said. "We are proud to enable that for patients in our region and beyond — and to give them the confidence that the quality of their care is second to none."
