UMass Memorial Medical Center Recognized as High Performing in Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) by U.S. News & World Report.
Congratulations to our Women’s Health team for earning top recognition as a ‘High Performing’ Maternity Hospital for the third year in a row by U.S. News & World Report.
To be recognized among U. S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care, 680 hospitals were evaluated using core maternity and perinatal care data for uncomplicated pregnancies. Recognition is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as cesarean delivery rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates, birthing-friendly practices, and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.
Of the 9 hospitals in Massachusetts reporting, UMass Memorial shared the highest recognition as High Performing in Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) with Mass General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
“We are proud once again to be recognized with the highest ranking a hospital can earn for maternity care by U.S. News & World Report. This demonstrates our caregivers’ commitment to providing patients with high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care throughout their entire pregnancy and postpartum journey,” said Tiffany Moore Simas, MD, MPH, MEd, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “We are especially proud of the ongoing work we do every day to ensure equity in health care that addresses racial and ethnic disparities. It is a privilege to provide award-winning care to patients here in Central Massachusetts.”
By reporting this data, U.S. News aims to enhance the transparency of maternity services provided for uncomplicated pregnancies and assist expectant parents in consultation with their doctors, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care.
All measures were collected via a nationwide survey conducted by U.S. News, and the reporting time period was the full 2021 calendar year. Participation was voluntary. This is the third time U.S. News has published a list of Best Hospitals for Maternity.
In addition to its “High Performing” Maternity Hospital recognition, UMass Memorial Medical Center Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has also been recognized. U.S. News evaluated 4,515 hospitals nationally and ranked the top 50 in Obstetrics and Gynecology that see a significant number of challenging patients for pelvic, cervical, uterine, and ovarian disease and procedures. UMass Memorial Medical Center is one of two Massachusetts providers in the top 50, ranking 38 nationally.
