What Are Lipid Disorders?  

Lipids are fats and other substances that circulate in your blood. Cholesterol and triglycerides are types of lipids. Your body needs lipids for energy and other functions. But a lipid imbalance can lead to health problems such as atherosclerosis (blocked arteries due to plaque buildup), heart attack or stroke.

The most common lipid imbalances include:

• High LDL cholesterol: LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is often called “bad” cholesterol. It increases your risk for cardiovascular disease.
• Low HDL cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is often called “good” cholesterol. It helps remove other forms of cholesterol from your body.
• High blood triglycerides: Calories your body doesn’t use are stored as triglycerides. High amounts increase your risk for coronary artery disease, stroke and pancreatitis.

What Causes Lipid Disorders?

Many factors can lead to abnormal lipid levels, such as:

• Aging
• Certain medications, such as antivirals and some blood pressure medications
• Drinking too much alcohol
• Eating a diet high in saturated fat, sugar and carbohydrates
• Family history of lipid disorders
• Having kidney disease or certain hormone disorders
• Having obesity
• Not being active
