A Letter From the Department Chair
Since its inception, the UMass Memorial Department of Neurosurgery has provided cutting-edge neurosurgical care not only for patients here in Central Massachusetts but also from around the world.
There are several reasons for this. First, our track record of excellent patient outcomes and reputation for high-quality, patient-focused care has enabled us to recruit high-caliber clinical talent. Today, we have a team of nine neurosurgeons who are globally recognized for their expertise in treating a wide range of neurological disorders—making us one of the leading neurosurgical programs in all of New England.
Second, as part of a teaching hospital, our department is dedicated to educating physicians-in-training who will become the neurosurgeons of tomorrow. Our faculty is at the top of their game, on the leading edge of neurosurgical knowledge, technology and techniques.
Third, our neurosurgeons participate in a host of research activities aimed at producing new discoveries that can save lives and improve the quality of patients’ lives. It’s important work that extends beyond our campus to have an impact on people the world over.
As chair of the UMass Department of Neurological Surgery, I am committed to supporting our talented faculty as they work to deliver the highest quality and most advanced neurosurgical care available. This is, first and foremost, our enduring commitment to you.
Sincerely,
Mark Johnson, MD, PhD
