Since the 1990s, surgeons have been assisted by robots in different types of surgery involving small and hard-to-reach areas of the body. Robotic assistance lets the surgeon perform delicate procedures with greater precision. This can often mean you will experience less pain, a faster recovery, and better outcome.
Similar to minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery uses long, thin surgical instruments guided by 3D images on a video monitor. The difference is that with robotic surgery, the surgeon performs the operation by controlling a robotic arm through a computer, instead of holding the instruments himself. The computer allows the surgeon to make extremely small, precise movements.
UMass Memorial offers a number of robotic procedures with the da Vinci system, the most advanced technology available today. Some of our procedures include
