Advancing Women’s Health Care through Research

Our women’s health providers at UMass Memorial Medical Center do more than just heal patients. They’re also involved in clinical research that helps advance women’s reproductive health and well-being in Central Massachusetts and beyond.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology proudly contribute to the research mission. We thank the thousands of women and families who have already volunteered to participate in our research projects.

• Ongoing studies are advertised in our waiting rooms. Please let us know if you’re interested in participating.
• You may be asked to be part of a specific research study. Your participation is up to you. Your choice to be part of a study doesn’t change the care you get.
• We ask that you consider being part of a study. Study involvement can be as simple as answering a few survey questions, to more long-term projects where you’re followed over time, and may offer different treatment options.
• You’ll always be told the risks and benefits of taking part in a study and the choice of participating or not participating is absolutely up to you.

Collaborative Research Efforts

Our doctors have participated in large collaborative research efforts like the Women’s Health Initiative and the National Children’s Study. We have active open trials looking to improve care for women with reproductive cancers through the National Cancer Institute’s Gynecologic Oncology Group and for pregnant women through the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Units Network. Additionally, our providers have individual ongoing studies that focus on weight gain in pregnancy, high blood pressure in pregnancy, pelvic reconstructive surgery outcomes and other topics.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Training at UMass Memorial Medical Center

As an academic medical center, UMass Memorial is the clinical home for UMass Chan Medical School and provides teaching and clinical rotations for medical students and residents who are training to be obstetricians and gynecologists.

Students and residents participate as part of the clinical team in general obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, urogynecology and gynecologic oncology as part of their training. Our Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to its educational mission and the responsibility to ensure the quality of our future doctors.

We also offer a fellowship program in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (also known as urogynecology). Fellows are doctors who have completed their ob/gyn or urology residency and chose to continue their training through our certified three-year fellowship.
