Bone and Soft Tissue Cancer (Sarcomas)
Bone and Soft Tissue Cancer Services We Provide
You have access to all the services you need, including:
- Advanced imaging: Single-photon emission computed tomography uses a radioactive substance and camera to produce 3D images of suspected tumors. Radiologists specializing in orthopedic imaging interpret the results.
- Surgery: Most sarcomas require surgery. We frequently use minimally invasive techniques to remove them. You may also need reconstructive surgery to repair structures, minimize the impact on your appearance and restore functioning.
- Radiation therapy: This treatment uses powerful energy to destroy cancer. You may need radiation therapy after surgery to eliminate remaining trace levels of cancer.
- Medical oncology: We use chemotherapy and other substances to stop cancer cell growth. Your care may include a combination of chemotherapy drugs, some of which attack specific genes (targeted therapy).
Why Choose Us for Bone Cancer and Sarcoma Care?
Team Approach
UMass Memorial is one of the few programs in Central Massachusetts and beyond using a multi-specialty approach. In addition to orthopedic oncologists, you benefit from the expertise of surgical oncologists,[LB2] medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other specialists. We communicate regularly to discuss your case and coordinate timely services that optimize healing.
Personalized Care
A bone cancer or sarcoma diagnosis comes with appointments for multiple specialists and frequent visits for various therapies. We coordinate the services you need to make this process less stressful. You may be able to see multiple specialists in a single visit. Our nurse navigator is available to answer your questions and support you throughout the process.
Rehabilitation Therapy
Depending on the size and location of the sarcoma, you may find once-simple movements challenging after treatment. Physical medicine doctors (physiatrists) and specially trained physical therapists coordinate services to optimize your abilities. Care may include exercises to help you regain strength or new methods for completing daily tasks. Explore rehabilitation therapy services.
