Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is rare, which can make finding out you have it quite a shock. But it’s important to know this cancer is highly curable. When you come to an experienced program, such as UMass Memorial Health, you receive the highest level of care. We offer standard treatments, including orchiectomy (surgical removal of one or both testes), in locations close to home. 

For complex cases, including advanced-stage cancers and ones that spread to nearby tissue, turn to UMass Memorial Medical Center. We are the only program in the region where a fellowship-trained genitourinary oncologist guides your care. You may receive services from additional urologists with advanced training in minimally invasive surgery. Types of Testicular Cancer We Treat

Testicular cancer occurs in the testicles, which produce sperm and male sex hormones. There are many types, including: 

• Seminomas, a slow-growing cancer that develops in the cells responsible for producing sperm (germ cells)
• Stromal tumors, which develop in tissue providing testicular structure, nourishment and hormone regulation
• Nonseminomas, faster-growing cancer that develops in the germ cells that can be difficult to treat
• Secondary testicular cancers that start in other organs and spread (metastasize) to the testicles

Robotic Surgery

UMass Memorial is one of the few programs in the region using robotic surgical technologies for orchiectomy and other testicular cancer procedures. Robotic surgical technologies enhance the precision and reach of our experts’ hands. This approach reduces the risk of nerve damage preserving sexual function. Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection (RPLND)

During this procedure, we remove select lymph nodes in the back of the abdomen. RPLND helps confirm whether the cancer has spread, may serve as treatment and reduces the risk of recurrence. Few programs in Massachusetts can match our experience and outcomes.

Chemotherapy

If you have advanced cancer, treatment may include chemotherapy. We offer newly approved drugs as well as tried-and-true options. You may also be eligible for additional options through our partnership with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 

Radiation Therapy
