Toxicology and Poison Care Services
Toxicology Physician Consultation
A UMass Memorial toxicologist is available 24/7 to provide poison care guidance to providers caring for pediatric and adult patients. This service helps people receive timely care reflecting the latest research-based methods for toxin exposure.
Outpatient Toxicology Clinic
Our team provides outpatient evaluations for suspected exposures to environmental and occupational toxins. This service is also for potential poisoning from substances taken by mouth. Medical toxicologists interpret outpatient toxicology testing and use this information to develop a personalized care plan. Call 855-UMASS-MD to schedule an appointment with a medical toxicologist.
Coordinated Poison Care
Medical toxicologists take an active role in poison care services. They guide the therapies you receive in our emergency department, intensive care unit and hospital wards. Toxicologists collaborate with other providers you may be seeing for a seamless experience. After discharge, we continue seeing you in outpatient settings to ensure your recovery stays on track.
UMass Memorial Excellence in Toxicology and Poison Care
Medical Toxicology Research
In partnership with UMass Chan Medical School, we participate in prominent research studies that are improving poison care and outcomes. Our interests include using technology to advance the field. Efforts include smart pills that monitor opioid use and wearable biosensors that detect cocaine in a person’s body.
Leadership in Medical Education
Our medical toxicologists are training the next generation of experts through medical education programs. We teach residents and fellows about the latest care methods and how to achieve excellent results. Only programs like ours that successfully treat a high volume of patients maintain this honor. Some of our faculty have won multiple awards for excellence in toxicology education.
Protecting Our Community
Our experts are involved in efforts to help lower the impact of poisoning and toxin exposure. We are part of the University of Massachusetts Overdose Protection Fund, which is making strides toward eliminating drug overdoses. We also partner with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to learn more about driving under the influence of drugs.
