Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

We offer advanced care for critically ill patients who need 24/7 heart and lung support.

Why Choose Us for Care?

Specialized ECMO Team

ECMO is a highly complex procedure requiring a multispecialty team. Your providers may include: pulmonologists, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists (critical care doctors), perfusionists (technicians who operate mechanical circulatory support devices), nurses and respiratory therapists.

Focus on Quality

Our ECMO outcomes exceed the national average, giving people with life-threatening illnesses the best possible chance for survival and recovery. We increase the number of ECMO procedures we do every year, continually working to improve the safety, efficiency and quality of our ECMO services.

Advanced Critical Care

People on ECMO receive around-the-clock monitoring and support in our state-of-the-art cardiac ICU at UMass Memorial Medical Center. We also use an ICU telemedicine (eICU) service to monitor critical patients at other UMass Memorial hospitals and evaluate them for ECMO when necessary.

After Care and Rehabilitation for ECMO Patients

People who transition off ECMO can find the rehabilitation therapy they need at UMass Memorial. We offer occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, speech-language pathology, palliative care and many other services in communities throughout Central Massachusetts and beyond.
