Timing is everything when you have a stroke. The UMass Memorial Health Telestroke Program connects our stroke experts directly to all our emergency rooms. You get an expert diagnosis and immediate treatment, right where you are.

How Telestroke Services Work

UMass Memorial stroke experts are available around the clock to care for stroke patients, no matter the location. When you arrive at one of our hospitals, you’re evaluated by the on-site emergency team. If the emergency room team suspects you’re having a stroke, they activate the telestroke system, which alerts the specialized stroke team.

The remote stroke specialist works with the on-site team to evaluate you via videoconferencing. Our specialists review your health history and any imaging or other tests. They can even talk with you and your loved ones. Your stroke specialist then makes a diagnosis and recommends appropriate treatment, which could include clot-busting medication to stop a stroke in its tracks or transfer for additional treatment.
