Our Musculoskeletal Imaging Services
UMass Memorial uses the latest musculoskeletal imaging technology to perform routine and advanced imaging studies of the bones, joints and soft tissue.
Our orthopedic imaging services include:
- X-rays: High-energy beams of radiation capture images of bones and joints.
- Fluoroscopy: Fluoroscopy provides real-time X-rays of treatment areas that enable musculoskeletal radiologists to deliver precise therapies.
- CT scans: A CT scan uses a series of X-rays and special technology to produce 2D or 3D images of bones, muscles, connective tissue and blood vessels.
- MRI scans: A strong magnetic field captures images in thin slices, and a computer assembles them into 3D pictures. MRI provides more information than a CT, helping us assess complex issues.
- Bone density scans: A bone density scan (DXA) uses X-rays to measure the strength of your bones.
Interventional Orthopedic Procedures
Some of our musculoskeletal radiologists have additional training in interventional procedures. We use real-time imaging to guide minimally invasive tests and procedures. Our specialists use needles or long tubes with instruments at the tip to carry out the services you need. You receive medications to help you stay comfortable during the procedure.
Interventional musculoskeletal procedures we offer include:
- Ablation uses intense hot or cold energy to destroy targeted areas of diseased tissue.
- Arthrocentesis removes excess fluid from a joint.
- Biopsies involve taking a tissue sample so we can run additional testing.
- Injections relieve chronic pain.
Why Choose Us for Orthopedic Imaging?
Diagnostic Expertise
At UMass Memorial, you are in the hands of experts. Radiologists specializing in musculoskeletal imaging, many with advanced fellowship training, interpret your scans. Their depth of experience in orthopedic imaging leads to the most appropriate scans for your needs and exceptional diagnostic accuracy.
Collaborative Care
Musculoskeletal imaging specialists work closely with other UMass Memorial providers you may be seeing. We frequently collaborate with experts in orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehab, podiatry, rheumatology and sports medicine. Our approach leads to seamless care that optimizes your ability to heal.
Advanced Interventional Procedures
You have access to sophisticated interventional options that are not widely available. UMass Memorial Medical Center is the only hospital in Central Massachusetts offering ultrasound-guided lavage and aspiration. This treatment relieves severe shoulder pain by removing calcium deposit buildups in your tendons (calcific tendinitis).
Refer a Patient
UMass Memorial providers can refer patients through EPIC. Community providers can receive assistance through Physician Concierge Services (PCS). You can also reach PCS by calling 800-431-5151 or emailing pcs@umassmemorial.org.
