Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS)
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is an effective, noninvasive and drug-free treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
What Is TMS Therapy?
Your brain has specific areas that control mood and behavior. When the nerve cells in those areas of the brain are underactive, it can result in depression and other conditions.
TMS therapy “wakes up” those underactive nerve cells, so the brain can work as it should. The treatment delivers focused magnetic pulses to the brain. It is not a drug, “shock therapy” or surgery.
A study of real-world outcomes reported an 83% response rate, which means 83% of patients experienced notable relief, and a 62% remission rate, which means their depression effectively went away.
What to Expect During TMS Therapy
Our team walks you through every step of your treatment so you feel confident about your care. First, you fill out a confidential questionnaire to assess your depression. Your provider reviews them during your appointment.
What Will I Feel During TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy is painless. You are awake and alert during the treatment. During each session:
- We place a cushioned coil against your head to deliver the magnetic pulses.
- You will feel a series of tapping, tingling or warming sensation where the device is positioned.
- Each session lasts about 20 minutes.
- After the treatment, you can immediately resume your regular daily activities.
Is TMS Therapy Covered by Insurance?
Most major insurance companies cover TMS therapy for MDD. New payors continue to add OCD to their list of covered conditions.
Most major insurance companies cover or reimburse TMS therapy for MDD if you:
- Are an adult diagnosed with moderate to severe MDD
- Have depression that’s not helped by at least two antidepressant medications (some insurance companies require up to four failed medications)
- Are not pregnant or nursing
Your insurance company may cover TMS therapy for OCD if you:
- Are an adult diagnosed with OCD
- Have symptoms that haven’t been relieved by at least two medications, and psychotherapy hasn’t worked
- Are not pregnant or nursing
