Mohs Surgery
We treat advanced skin cancers and maintain very high success rates using this research-based technique that’s gentler on your body.
Why Choose Us for Mohs Surgery?
Expertise
At UMass Memorial Health, you receive services from surgeons who are fellowship-trained and double board-certified in Dermatology and Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology (Mohs surgery and skin cancer), with special training in skin cancer, surgery, and reconstructive techniques. They work closely with oculoplastic (eye) surgeons and plastic surgeons when needed to give you the best results.
Optimal Cosmetic Outcomes
Mohs surgery often leaves a scar, but we try to hide it among the natural contours of your face. Additional services such as laser therapy may help minimize their appearance. Skin cancers on the eyelids, nose or ears may require reconstructive surgery. Highly skilled Mohs surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons and oculoplastic surgeons deliver these services.
Leadership and Research
Through our partnership with UMass Chan Medical School, our team leads a procedural dermatology fellowship that’s training the next generation of Mohs surgeons. Only centers like ours that perform a high volume of procedures and maintain excellent outcomes retain this honor. We are also advancing the field through cancer research and clinical trials.
Access to Advanced Cancer Care Services
As the leading cancer care provider in Central Massachusetts, we offer comprehensive cancer care services. Patients can easily access the tests and treatments they need from our radiation oncology, medical oncology, and surgical oncology specialists.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Procedures typically take between two to four hours. And most patients receive complete treatment in one session.
We perform Mohs surgery under local anesthesia, which blocks discomfort but doesn’t put you to sleep. After we remove a layer of skin, we put a bandage over the area, and you are free to move about. You can sit up, read, use your phone and go to the bathroom.
We provide instructions so you know precisely what to do. For example, you’ll want to avoid alcohol for a few days before your procedure. Since the Mohs surgery takes a while, you might want to bring a snack. It’s also helpful to arrange for someone to drive you home.
After the anesthesia wears off, you may have some discomfort. We will provide instructions regarding activity limitations, wound care and pain control based on each patient’s needs.
