UMass Memorial Health is at the forefront of cancer care. Through our partnership with UMass Chan Medical School, we lead and participate in promising research efforts that are advancing the field. These studies give you access to innovative therapies and methods years before they become the standard of care. It also enables our team to successfully treat rare and complex cancers right here in our community

Our Clinical Cancer Research Interests

UMass Memorial is home to scientists and clinical researchers recruited from around the world, who are leaders in their respective fields. Their research spans nearly every aspect of cancer prevention, detection and treatment. Studies conducted in our labs, clinics and hospitals have led to innovations that are improving care possibilities. We share this knowledge with providers worldwide through publications.

Clinical cancer research at UMass Memorial has led to:

• New methods for preventing cancer and detecting it in earlier stages
• Innovative approaches for prostate cancer therapy
• Enhanced bone marrow transplant capabilities
• Treatment for malignant melanoma
• Combined chemotherapy-surgical procedures for late-stage peritoneal cancer
• 3D breast tumor imaging
• Radiation therapy with better precision
• Treatment options for breast or prostate cancer that has spread (metastasized) to the bones  
• Stem cell therapy for leukemia
• New targeted therapies for lymphoma

These are some of our team’s many accomplishments. Additional studies are currently underway investigating additional care methods for many cancer types.

Cancer Clinical Trials

You may be eligible to participate in cancer research at UMass Memorial through clinical trials. Participation is voluntary. If you qualify, we explain the risks and benefits of taking part in the study. Participation may involve a few additional clinic visits. But you may be able to receive innovative services that wouldn’t otherwise be available.
