Become an Organ Donor
You have the ability to save a life—or even several lives—by being an organ and tissue donor. And you can do this in two ways:
Kidney Transplant
A kidney (renal) transplant is surgery in which a healthy kidney from a donor is placed into your body and takes over the job of filtering your blood. The donor is a person who has just died or a living person, most often a family member.

At UMass Memorial Medical Center, our surgeons provide a wide range of clinical and consultative plastic and reconstructive surgical services for adult and pediatric patients in Central Massachusetts.
Plastic and Reconstructive Services at UMass Memorial Medical Center
We provide cosmetic surgery evaluations and treatments, as well as reconstructive surgery, including breast reduction and reconstruction and reconstruction after removal of a melanoma.

Sphincter-sparing Surgery
For patients who have colorectal cancer in the lower part of the colon, surgeons often remove both the rectum and the anus. If the anus is removed, the patient typically needs a permanent colostomy, which collects stool in a bag that is attached to the abdominal wall.
For some low rectal cancers, our colon and rectal surgeons at UMass Memorial Medical Center now perform a more advanced type of surgery that eliminates the need for a permanent colostomy. Called sphincter-sparing surgery, this procedure allows for safe removal of the tumor and "spares" the anal sphincter muscle.
Benign breast issues, plastic and reconstructive surgery
UMass Memorial Medical Center offers a collaborative team of physicians dedicated to the care of women with breast disease—including cancer, benign tumors, fibrocystic breast disease and more.
About Our Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery represents one of the broadest groups within UMass Memorial Medical Center, with 10 divisions on the University, Memorial, and Hahnemann campuses in Worcester, MA. We also provide specialty care through our member hospitals and at clinical office locations in the community.
