Conditions We Treat

There are numerous medical oncology options. When you come to UMass Memorial, you receive the best one for your needs.

We successfully treat patients with:

Infusions Close to Home

We deliver medical oncology therapies through a vein (infusion) in a special clinic called an infusion suite. UMass Memorial infusion suites are located throughout Central Massachusetts and beyond, making it easier to receive care closer to home. Oncology-certified nurses coordinate treatments and provide attentive monitoring for a safe, comfortable experience.

Some locations have spacious, private treatment areas with large windows, panoramic views and a healing garden. You may also be able to receive therapies on Saturdays. Patients with urgent needs can often receive care within one business day.

Our Chemotherapy and Medical Oncology Services

The treatment type that is right for you depends on the diagnosis and severity. Your personalized care plan may include:

  • Biologic therapies: These treatments use organic substances to treat cancer. Immunotherapy is one type of biologic therapy.
  • Bone marrow transplant: Replaces nonfunctioning blood-producing cells with ones from a healthy donor
  • CAR T-cell therapy: Immunotherapy that uses modified T-cells to treat certain blood cancers
  • Chemotherapy: Uses drugs or other substances to halt rapidly multiplying cells
  • Immunotherapy: Helps the body recognize and attack cancer using modified immune system cells
  • Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC):  Circulates a heated solution through the abdominal area to treat certain gastrointestinal cancer
  • Targeted therapy: Uses drugs or other substances that attack proteins responsible for helping cancer cells grow and spread
  • Bispecific Antibody Therapies: Bispecific antibody therapy is a treatment that connects a cancer cell to an immune cell (like a T cell). One part of the antibody attaches to the cancer cell, and the other part attaches to the immune cell. This brings them together so the immune cell can recognize and destroy the cancer cell.

Why Choose Us for Cancer Treatment?

Coordinated Care

Hematologist-oncologists and stem cell transplant and cellular therapy specialists work alongside other cancer experts to tailor treatments for seamless care. Our team includes radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, palliative care specialists, infectious disease specialists and other providers. Patients often see many specialists in a single visit, making it easier to coordinate services.

Research and Clinical Trials

Our hematologist-oncologists participate in prestigious clinical trial networks that are advancing the field. These efforts give you early access to new medical oncology options, including CAR T, — often years before they are widely available. Get more information about cancer research and clinical trials.

Dana-Farber Cancer Care Collaborative

UMass Memorial Medical Center was the first academic medical center to join the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Cancer Care Collaborative. Participation gives our experts access to additional knowledge about medical oncology methods for complex diagnoses. This information exchange helps you receive optimal treatment without leaving the community.
