At UMass Memorial Medical Center - Children’s Medical Center, we know kids. We know they have unique physical and mental health needs separate from adults. We know that one-size-fits-all is not how health care works, especially in an emergency situation. That’s why our Pediatric Emergency Room is specifically designed with your child in mind.

As the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region, we offer a dedicated kid-focused setting with an emergency staff, trained in pediatric care, available 24/7. Pediatric Emergency and Urgent Care

Children require staff and physicians with advanced training in the care of children with critical illnesses or injuries. The Pediatric Emergency Room at the Children's Medical Center:

• Is staffed by dedicated emergency staff trained in pediatric care 
• Employs child life specialists who make children more comfortable through distraction and explaining tests and procedures in a way that children understand
• Has adopted the Kid's Comfort Promise, which uses age-appropriate techniques and medications to minimize pain and anxiety from shots, blood draws, or IV lines
• Has 13 private rooms where your child will be treated in a warm, caring environment.
• Offers a kid-friendly environment complete with the Hanover Insurance Group Children's Waiting Area for children and their families
• Provides direct access to dozens of pediatric specialists

Urgent care for children and adolescents is provided in the PediPlace, also known as the Pediatric Emergency Room within The Duddie Massad Emergency and Trauma Center. Your child will receive expert medical care when your pediatrician or family doctor is unavailable. Many area doctors regularly refer children to PediPlace for after-hours visits because they know the staff prides itself on quality care and attentive service. 

Emergency pediatric care is offered 24/7.
